can you do a vid on vw cranks? materals, stroke, power. combos, flanged... maybe rods and rod lengths, combos, reliability. im sure others would like advise from somebody not in a companies pocket. just an idea. thanks

Way too much is depending on oil pressure to simply "HOPE" that spring tension is good enough. Some say, "You don't want it to be too much, you don't want it to be too little." What does this mean when you are trying to control oil pressure at RPM and idle? There is a spring tension specification in the Volkswagen manual under the Engine section, page 35 for Type 1 and page 30 for Type 2. Installing each of these springs should never be guess work. There is a lot of spring tension variation even among new springs. Spring tension is measured when the spring is compressed to the specified loaded length. To do this will require a scale on the drill press table. Set the depth control on the drill press to the specified spring loaded length above the scale surface. Compress the spring to the loaded length then observe and record the scale force. Install springs to your liking then observe their performance. Swap them out as necessary to adjust for desired performance. Great info bro. I as well built my first engine in 1981. Seems we think alike. My last 2165 built a year ago was sealed with yamabond type sealer. Zero case leaks at 10k hard high rpm miles. Cheers!

You can flip the the ring gear in a SSC case. It's not easy, but it can be done.

I have a question. I have a engine that was a 1641. Cam in a 120 . I don't want to break the case apart. Want to increase the h.p. by going to 1600 jugs. The crank is a stock 69mm . I have been looking at rods some the center to center is longer. That's my question, can I get more compression by just changing the lenth of the rods, or is that a really bad idea

Hey ,i am learning alot ,but i have a question..1641, mild port on stock heads, Engle 110 cam , 1.25 rockers. How can you check for valve cleanance and then determine compression short of assembly and then gauge it thru srark plug . Bobby

Hi Darrin, I watched you and CT build up that old 40hp motor that doesn't take the case stud orings like mine but it does have the cam bearings. Mine must be older than that one you guys worked on because mine doesn't take cam bearings just the crank journal ones. What year did they start using cam bearings on these. mine was built March of 65.

Hey Darrin, good stuff! I’ve got a leak at the jug where it seats at case, is this a head torque issue? Or improper seal at case? Can I use honda sealant at the base without pulling motor? High temp silicone sealer?

Interestingt to hear you talk about reversing the transaxle drive. I have a VW engine and trans bike that I have gradually refined over the years, with a steel shaft through the diff, driving a sprocket. Just wonder if you have ever felt the need to build a bike of this type ?
